Kathy Katz has left the 20/20 Diner at Southern College of Optometry to open Cooper Street 20/20, 800 Cooper, a market where she sells to-go items such as soups, quiche, main dish casseroles, hummus and pimento cheese. New items will be added to the menu. It's open noon to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. Call (901) 871-6879 for more information.

A process video of Kathy's chalkboard being constructed.
This past week I got to work on my first chalkboard menu. I designed it in illustrator then threw it up on the blackboard. Check it out! If you happen to be in Memphis, you can see it live! At the Cooper Street 20/20, in Cooper Young.
Meanwhile, Kathy Katz, owner of Cooper Street 20/20, has inked a 1,250-square-foot lease at 800 S. Cooper St. Formerly known as 20/20 Diner for 25 years and housed in a 700-square-foot space in the Southern College of Optometry, Katz opted to expand her fresh prepared foods business into Cooper-Young in the commercial kitchen vacated by Muddy’s Bake Shop.
“I decided to do this because I’ve been at the farmers market Downtown for five years and I’ve got such a huge following with my small little 22 items,” Katz said. “When this came up, it was kind of like a dream come true because I can make anything I want. Today, we decided to make chicken roulade stuffed with spinach and mushrooms with a lemon sauce over it. At the college, I’d have to make you a turkey sandwich with Swiss cheese. If I made this fancy stuff, they wouldn’t eat it.”
Katz, a self-taught chef featured in publications like Southern Living magazine, tries to buy all of her ingredients locally and the majority of her food is low-fat and vegetarian.
Cooper Street 20/20 is now open for business at the corner of Cooper and Elzey Avenue in a building owned by Inbalance Fitness’ Scott Lebowitz.

Kathy Katz has struck out on her own to bring her vision of prepared meals to Memphians.
After 25 years of operating 20/20 Diner at the Southern College of Optometry, Katz officially opened Cooper Street 20/20 at 800 S. Cooper in late November.
“I just decided to go out on my own and try to do this,” Katz said.
Taking over a former Muddy’s Bake Shop ancillary kitchen space, Katz provides prepared soups, sauces, entrees and side dishes for pick-up and uses local ingredients whenever possible.
In addition to running the 20/20 Diner, Katz has spent the past five years selling prepared foods at the Memphis Farmers Market, the Farmers Market at Memphis Botanic Garden and the Tsunami Farmers Market. Many of her customers from these markets will be customers in her new 1,100-square-foot space, she said.
“I have a huge following from the markets,” Katz said.
